We are delighted to announce the launch of the APM Postgraduate Medical Education Special Interest Forum (PME SIF). The PME SIF is part of the APM Education and Training Committee, chaired by Dr Suzie Gillon, and is open to any doctor interested in the provision of postgraduate medical education. The purpose of the PME SIF is to provide a network for individuals with an interest in providing postgraduate palliative medicine education and its aims include:

  • To facilitate sharing of research evidence and best practice in postgraduate medical education
  • To provide updates on developments in postgraduate medical education
  • To provide an accessible repository of palliative medicine educational resources offered by participating members and organisations for use by all
  • To hold educational events for individuals who deliver postgraduate medical education, including an annual meeting. There are many great reasons to join the APM – but membership of the PME SIF is open to all, including non-members.

Resources

The following resources have been shared by palliative care colleagues across the UK with the aim of facilitating wider sharing of educational ideas and approaches in our specialty. We hope to add more useful educational resources over time. If you are interested in sharing any resources that you have developed locally, please contact us. Please be aware that it is up to individual users to check the accuracy and relevance of the material before using in their teaching.

Palliative Medicine Curriculum 2022

From August 2022, palliative medicine trainees will dual train with internal medicine. This represents a major change to training. Supervisors and doctors in training will notice that the new curriculum looks very different from the 2010 (2014 amendment) curriculum, with a move away from detailed competence-based training to high level learning outcomes, of capabilities in practice (CiPs).

There are already some national resources to support the implementation of the new curriculum on the JRCPTB website – see https://www.jrcptb.org.uk/training-certification/physician-trainer-resources

The Specialty Advisory committee has also developed a Rough Guide to training Rough guide Palliative Medicine December 2020

In 2022, supervisors and trainees will be invited to events to support the launch of the new curriculum – these are likely to be organised on a regional basis.

Human Factors Training

Human factors training need to be done in a Simulation setting. Advanced communication skills training also counts for human factors training (but not the public health in palliative care course).

Palliative care simulation package for IMTs
