An APM Study Day, organised by the Trainees’ Committee

This study day has been organised by the APM trainees committee to meet the curriculum requirements but the content will be relevant to all working in palliative medicine and we would welcome attendance from non-trainees.

Introduction

We are delighted to be able to re-start national trainee study days and really hope trainees across the country will be able to join us on 17 January. We have a fantastic panel of speakers who are covering topics ranging from management, portfolio careers, getting the most from medical journals and how to use research findings to influence clinical practice.

We are pleased to announce that the recent addition to the programme is an interactive management session, this is being facilitated by Professor Rob George and Dr Amy Proffitt. They will cover a range of topics relating to management in NHS and independent hospices. The programme has been designed to help meet the curriculum competencies relating to research, evidence-based medicine and management.

Please note, this is an updated version of the study day “Research, Why Bother?”

Looking at the research world with a ‘clinician’s pair of eyes’

This is a talk from a retired clinician who is not an academic about their research experience. It focusses on the advantages and opportunities of having active engagement with the academic/research world and how change can be encouraged by ‘telling clinical stories’ through academic publications.
It will demonstrate how clinicians can facilitate a credible research agenda but will not focus on research methodology

Papers, publishing and practice: lessons from a journal editor

Professor Catherine Walshe
Professor of Palliative Care, The International Observatory on End of Life Care, Lancaster

The Joys and Challenges of a Portfolio Career in Medicine and Medical Education

Professor Faye Gishen
Director, University College London Medical School

Compare and contrast working in the NHS vs Higher Education Institution (HEI) through a portfolio career, understand how to credentialise and progress in undergraduate medical education, touch on research in the social sciences (medical education); consider some leadership approahces.

Interactive session on Management

Professor Rob George
