Palliative and end of life care is far too exclusive. Death, dying, loss and care giving does not happen by disease, diagnosis or any other defining characteristics. It happens with sudden deaths, disease from any cause, murder, suicide, accidents, natural disasters as well as wars. The consequences of these experiences have a profound impact on all of our lives, yet palliative care is only applied to people with very specific diseases which are predictable.
Public health palliative care sees these experiences as a primarily social event which happens in every day lives of schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods, public spaces and others in very specific cultural contexts. It is not a medical event with a social component.
